This page helps you understand specific messages issued by the Solver and determine what action to take. The messages are grouped according to the place (e.g. dialog box) and time when they appear. Within each grouping, the messages are arranged alphabetically. A few messages with "obvious" meanings, such as "No constraints to delete" when there are no constraints and you click on Delete, are omitted.

Messages for the Solver menu choice

Active document is not a worksheet or is protected.

This message appears when a protected worksheet, or a chart, macro sheet or other type of sheet is frontmost at the time you select the Solver menu choice. A Solver model can only be defined on a worksheet -- which must be unprotected to allow the Solver to save information as you work with the Solver Parameters and Solver Options dialogs.

Cannot do this command in Group Edit mode.

This message appears if Microsoft Excel is in Group Edit mode at the time you select the Solver menu choice. The Solver is not designed to operate on this mode.

Cannot do this command in Data Entry mode.

This message appears if Microsoft Excel is in Data Entry mode at the time you select the Solver menu choice. The Solver is not designed to operate on this mode.
